I’m on a mission to promote seamanship and safe boating practices for sailors and professional mariners through education and certification. I’ve spent the last 15+ years dedicated to cruising distant harbors on the Great Lakes as well as sailboat racing during overnight regattas crossing Lake Michigan. I hold a USCG 100 ton Master Near Coastal captain’s license and encourage sailing education and safety. I’ve enjoyed sharing my expertise to promote sailing at several organizations from the East Coast to the MidWest, and have been trained as a first responder while maintaining first aid and CPR certifications.
My entire reason for creating this online course is to help boaters prevent collisions and accidents on the water. As a boater, you’re required to follow the U.S. Coast Guard navigation rules whether you operate a 10-foot personal watercraft, a 60-foot yacht or an oceangoing freighter. There are too many people on the water that do not fully understand these rules, their requirements, or the actions needed. With a knowledge of the basic rules and how they apply to your type of boating, you can safely operate near other vessels and inform them of your intentions. You should also be aware that you may face civil and criminal penalties for neglecting these rules. When you become the skipper or captain, it is you who are responsible for understanding and following these rules and I created this course to help get you familiar with all the rules.
